Teaching Pronunciation to EFL Learners: Existing Challenges And Future Perspectives

doc. PaedDr. Rastislav Metruk, Ph.D., University of Ostrava, Czech Republic

Abstract

Pronunciation, being a crucial element of foreign language learning and acquisition, frequently receives insufficient attention at EFL (English as a foreign language) classes. Effective communication relies not only on grammar or lexis, but also on the quality of speech. For many foreign language learners, clear and appropriate pronunciation is key to both being understood and feeling confident when speaking. Unfortunately, it is frequently this language system that is neglected when it comes to teaching English. Therefore, this article attempts to cast more light on this matter by examining the responses of EFL learners concerning pronunciation instruction. The data, which were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire, suggest that in spite of its significance, other language systems, predominantly grammar and vocabulary, still seem to take priority over pronunciation. The paper further discusses the ongoing challenges by interpreting participants’ responses, indicating that pronunciation instructions merits more attention both from the standpoint of teachers and learners.
