Vývoj vyobrazenia materstva v žánri vysokej fantasy

Abstrakt: Tento výskum sa zameriava na vývoj zobrazovania materstva ženských postáv v žánri vysokej fantasy. Cieľom je identifikovať zmeny, ktoré nastali v zobrazovaní materstva v rámci tohto žánru ako súčasť širších zmien, ktorými ženské postavy prešli od vzniku žánru v polovici 20. storočia. Prostredníctvom realizácie metód pozorného čítania a tematickej analýzy tento výskum dokumentuje zmeny, ktoré sú viditeľné v knihách Hrobky Atuanu od Ursuly K. Le Guinovej, Ochrankyňa duší od Lois McMaster Bujoldovej a Deň padlej noci od Samanthy Shannonovej. Zmeny v zobrazovaní materstva sú prítomné v troch oblastiach, a to v spôsobe, akým postavy chápu materstvo, v spôsobe, akým postavy komunikujú so svojimi matkami a chápu ich, a v spôsobe, akým sa správajú a vnímajú samy seba ako matky. Tento výskum ukazuje, že staršie diela vysokej fantasy, ktoré tu reprezentuje román Hrobky Atuanu, vnímajú materstvo a matky ako nedôležité, keďže hlavná postava Tenar neprejavuje žiadny názor na materstvo ani túžbu po vzťahu s vlastnou matkou. Neskoršia fantasy, ktorú tu reprezentuje Ochrankyňa duší, kladie oveľa väčší dôraz na koncept materstva a samotné matky, ale do vzťahu medzi matkami a ich deťmi sa príliš nepúšťa. Súčasná fantasy, ktorú tu reprezentuje Deň padlej noci, kladie dôraz na matku aj dcéru a na to, ako obe chápu materstvo a vzťah medzi nimi. Tento posun v zobrazovaní materstva, od toho, že sa o ňom takmer nehovorí, až po to, že zohráva kľúčovú úlohu vo vývoji postáv a príbehu, naznačuje aj posun v zobrazovaní ženských postáv v rámci žánru vysokej fantasy, pričom ženské postavy v súčasnej vysokej fantasy zohrávajú oveľa dôležitejšie a komplexnejšie úlohy ako v minulosti.

Abstract: This research focuses on the evolution of the depiction of motherhood in female characters in the high fantasy genre. The goal is to identify the changes that occurred in the depiction of motherhood within the genre as a part of the larger changes female characters have undergone since the genre’s conception in the mid-20^th century. Through the implementation of close reading and thematic analysis, this research documents the changes as seen in Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin, Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold, and The Day of the Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. The changes in the depiction of motherhood are present in three areas, and those are the way the characters understand motherhood, the way the characters interact with and understand their mothers, and the way they act and see themselves as mothers. This research shows that the earlier works of high fantasy, represented here by The Tombs of Atuan, see motherhood and mothers as unimportant, as the main character, Tenar, does not showcase any opinion on motherhood, or desire for a relationship with her own mother. The later fantasy, represented here by Paladin of Souls, puts a much greater emphasis on the concept of motherhood and mothers themselves, but does not delve much into the relationship between mothers and their children. The contemporary fantasy, represented here by The Day of the Fallen Night, puts emphasis on both the mother and the daughter, and the way they both understand motherhood and the relationship between them. This shift in the depiction of motherhood, from barely being mentioned to playing a crucial role in the development of characters and the story, is also indicative of the shift in the depiction of female characters within the high fantasy genre, wherein female characters in the contemporary high fantasy play much more important and complex roles than they played in the past.
